Sydney day-trip too long: do not add Pigeon House after Fitzroy
Why a late Sydney start cannot honestly stack Fitzroy Falls and Pigeon House (Didthul). Wrong-base and too-long-day filter for Morton.

Pigeon House (Didthul)

If your plan is “Fitzroy Falls in the morning, Pigeon House after lunch, Sydney by dinner,” the decision is already no. This article is the too-long-day filter: pick one primary product, pick the matching gateway, and protect the reverse clock.
Unofficial. Live track status, road access and fees live with NPWS. Drive times below are typical published bands, not a stopwatch from a field visit.
The decision
Do not add Pigeon House (Didthul) after a Fitzroy Falls morning from Sydney. The park is huge; the two icons sit on different approach stories. One primary product per calendar day.
If you only have daylight from Sydney, Fitzroy formed lookouts are the default first-timer win. Didthul wants an early trailhead from Milton / Ulladulla, more water than the kilometre number suggests, and a hard reverse clock.
Wrong-base trap
Sleeping in Bundanoon then “swinging past” Didthul on the way home to Sydney is how groups hit ladders late, descend in poor light, and still have a highway drive.
Sleeping in Ulladulla then adding Fitzroy “because we’re in Morton” is the same trap in reverse. Morton is one park name covering multiple days of geography.
Pairing ban and turnaround
Pairing ban: Fitzroy + Didthul same day. Also ban: Didthul + remote gorge walking after the summit.
Turnaround: if you left Sydney after a civilised breakfast, you already chose lookouts-or-nothing — not a Grade 4-ish summit. On-site closed gates beat any itinerary PDF.
FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Can a very fit group still stack both?
Fitness does not shrink the drive between precincts or the UXO stay-on-track rules on the southern climb. Stacking is a logistics failure, not a fitness badge.
Where should I sleep for Didthul?
Milton / Ulladulla is the honest South Coast base. Bundanoon is the honest Highlands base for Fitzroy / Gambells Rest. Mixing them in one dawn-to-midnight smash is the trap.
What if I only have one Sydney day?
Choose Fitzroy lookouts (or a Bundanoon forest day). Save Didthul for a trip that starts on the South Coast. One icon done well beats two unfinished ones.
