Morton National Park · Unofficial free checklist
Practical falls & walks checklist
Packing · half-day Fitzroy order of stops · full-day rules · UXO note · parking realism · official NPWS links.
From mortonnationalpark.com.au — print this page or save as PDF (no email required).
Verify everything officially. Track status, entry fees, camping, fire bans and closures change.
Always check
NSW National Parks — Morton National Park
and
Morton local alerts. This checklist is independent
and unofficial — not NPWS or the NSW Government. Official campgrounds (e.g. Gambells Rest) book via NPWS only.
Emergencies:
000.
Entry fees often apply by precinct (public materials commonly cite about
$4 per vehicle/day at Fitzroy Falls and about
$8 per vehicle/day at Bundanoon — always [VERIFY] live amounts). NSW Parks Passes may suit
repeat visits. This checklist never affiliates park entry or NPWS camping.
UXO / restricted areas: parts of the south-eastern park were formerly used for military training
and may contain unexploded ordnance. Restricted zones exist. Stay on signposted tracks and vehicle trails only;
follow all official instructions. Beginners: prefer Fitzroy Falls / Bundanoon formed walks.
1. Before you leave home
Status & weather
- ☐ NPWS / Park Alerts checked this morning
- ☐ Plateau forecast (Southern Highlands), not only Sydney CBD
- ☐ One primary product chosen (Fitzroy / Belmore / Bundanoon / Pigeon House)
- ☐ Hero walk confirmed open if it’s West Rim, Didthul or remote
- ☐ Plan B lookouts if rain, wind, fog or full car parks
- ☐ Someone knows your rough plan + return window
- ☐ Screenshot alerts while you still have signal
Packing (day pack)
- ☐ Water 1.5–2 L+ per person (more for Pigeon House)
- ☐ Snacks / simple lunch
- ☐ Waterproof shell
- ☐ Warm mid-layer (plateau rims run cold / misty)
- ☐ Sun hat + sunscreen
- ☐ Grip shoes (not fashion soles near wet rock)
- ☐ Phone + offline map / trailhead screenshot
- ☐ Insect repellent (Bundanoon rainforest edges)
- ☐ Basic first aid / blister kit
- ☐ Cash/card for park entry machines + café recovery
2. Half-day: Fitzroy Falls lookouts (≈3–5 hrs on the ground)
Timing skeleton
- 0:00 — Arrive Fitzroy day-use. Pay entry ([VERIFY]). Toilets. Valuables hidden.
- 0:15–0:45 — Visitor centre when open (~9am–4pm, closed Christmas Day — [VERIFY]).
- 0:45–2:00 — Formed main lookouts. Stay behind barriers. One calm photo cluster.
- 2:00–3:30 — Optional short West Rim only if open, energy and weather allow.
- 3:30+ — Town food buffer (Moss Vale / Bundanoon / Kangaroo Valley / Robertson).
Success metrics
- ☐ Whole group finishes safely
- ☐ Turned around if weather / fatigue demanded
- ☐ Did not invent a second hard precinct
- ☐ No dusk cliff-edge extensions
- ☐ Entry fees and parking legal
Distances, grades and surface notes are planning ranges only — verify on
nationalparks.nsw.gov.au
for your date.
3. Full-day rule (protect the day)
-
One primary product (usually Fitzroy lookouts) + one short add-on maximum
(Belmore Falls or a short Bundanoon loop — not both if the group is cooked).
-
Do not stack Fitzroy West Rim + Belmore + full Bundanoon network + Pigeon House (Didthul) on a first
visit from a late start.
-
If the longer walk is closed or rain is heavy: main Fitzroy lookouts + visitor centre still count as a
successful park day.
-
Pigeon House Mountain (Didthul) is a separate South Coast summit product (Milton / Ulladulla
logistics) — not a casual Fitzroy add-on.
-
Official campgrounds (Gambells Rest etc.) book only via NPWS — never through this checklist as an affiliate
product.
4. Order-of-stops / decision tree
First-timer / one solid Highlands day
Fitzroy Falls day-use → main formed lookouts → optional short West Rim if open → town reset.
Energy left after Fitzroy
Belmore Falls later same day only — not Bundanoon full network + Belmore + West Rim.
Rainforest / quieter day
Bundanoon precinct (Fairy Bower / Erith style options when open) — separate entry logistics.
Want Pigeon House (Didthul)
Own day with fitness, water, South Coast base — not a late Fitzroy add-on.
Remote / SE plateau / Budawang edge
Alerts + UXO restricted-area discipline first. Beginners: Fitzroy or Bundanoon instead.
Car park full / heavy rain / high wind
Wait, retime, main lookouts only, or cancel. Do not invent illegal parks or dusk cliff ego.
5. Parking, fees & crowds
- ☐ Peak at Fitzroy: weekends, school holidays, fine weather — arrive early
- ☐ Entry fees by precinct (Fitzroy often ~$4; Bundanoon often ~$8 — [VERIFY] live)
- ☐ Pay machines — cash and card when working; Parks Passes may suit repeat visits ([VERIFY])
- ☐ Never leave bags visible in cars
- ☐ Legal parking only — no inventing roadside spots that block access
- ☐ Belmore / Bundanoon / Pigeon House: separate logistics — plan drive time honestly
6. Safety non-negotiables
- ☐ Unfenced cliff edges and lookouts — serious fall risk; keep children close; stay behind barriers
- ☐ Slippery rocks and tracks after rain, especially near waterfalls
- ☐ Steep sections on summit and gorge walks (including Pigeon House ladders / steps when present)
- ☐ UXO / restricted areas — signposted tracks and vehicle trails only (see red note above)
- ☐ Weather can change quickly on the plateau — layers, shell, water margin
- ☐ Mobile coverage patchy or absent in many areas
- ☐ No pets in the park
- ☐ Emergency: call 000. This checklist cannot help with rescue
