Itineraries
Guide updated · verify NSW National Parks the morning you go
These plans are built for real Southern Highlands days and short stays — drive time, car parks, weather and energy included — not fantasy “do everything” checklists. Pick the plan that matches your group, then open it for a full timeline, packing notes and what to skip. Print from any plan page, or grab the free day-trip checklist anytime.
Every itinerary defers to NSW National Parks for track status and alerts.

3–5 hours on the ground
Half-day Fitzroy Falls: lookouts & short rim
First visit from Moss Vale, Bundanoon, Kangaroo Valley or Robertson
Visitor centre orientation, main waterfall lookouts, optional short West Rim style add-on — without pretending you also need Belmore, Bundanoon rainforest and Pigeon House before lunch.

Full day on the ground (or overnight if camping)
Bundanoon day: rainforest & escarpment tracks
Walkers based in Bundanoon / Moss Vale wanting forest days rather than only waterfall platforms
Northern Morton day from Bundanoon: Fairy Bower style rainforest walking, optional second named track (e.g. Erith Coal Mine when open), village recovery — with honest entry-fee and Gambells Rest camping notes.

Full day including drive and climb
Pigeon House (Didthul) summit day
Fit walkers based near Milton / Ulladulla (or willing to dedicate a full South Coast day)
Early trailhead, steady climb on the official Pigeon House Mountain Didthul walking track, careful ladder sections when open, summit time only in safe weather, disciplined descent — not a multi-stop highlands waterfall day.

Full day with driving between precincts
Highlands falls combo: Fitzroy + Belmore
Visitors who want two waterfall nodes in one Southern Highlands day
Morning Fitzroy Falls lookouts (and optional short rim), drive to Belmore Falls lookouts, town recovery — only when weather, alerts and energy support two cliff-edge stops.
Open plan →

Full day with large safety margins
Quiet remote day: plateau edge (experienced only)
Experienced bushwalkers who already know formed Morton day walks and want space
A self-reliant day on quieter signed plateau / gorge-edge walking away from Fitzroy crowds — only with navigation skill, UXO restricted-area discipline, and a hard reverse plan. Beginners should pick Fitzroy or Bundanoon instead.

What to bring
Practical kit for cliff walks and changeable mountain weather
- Grip walking shoes / trail runnersLookout paths can be damp; Pigeon House has steep / ladder sections — fashion shoes fail
- Layers for plateau weatherSouthern Highlands plateaus run cold and misty; summer still needs a warm layer for rim lookouts
- Rain shell (packable)Waterfalls look best after rain — and tracks get slippery the same day
- Day pack 15–25 LWater, snacks, layers for half-day falls circuits or full summit days
- Water bottle or bladder 1.5–2 L+Pigeon House and remote gorge days need more water than a short Fitzroy lookout loop
- Sun hat + SPFPlateau sections and summit approaches can be exposed even when valleys look shaded
- Insect repellentRainforest gullies and summer evenings — especially Bundanoon tracks
- First-aid + blister kitSteep summit approaches and longer gorge walks punish new boots
- Head torch (remote days)If you misjudge a longer walk, finishing in dusk on escarpment tracks is a real risk
- Power bank + offline mapsScreenshot NPWS alerts; mobile coverage is patchy or absent in many park sections
