Why Belmore works as a second waterfall node
Belmore Falls is the highlands pair many locals already know: another sandstone gorge and waterfall story on approaches via Robertson or Kangaroo Valley. It is rarely the only Morton product of a first interstate trip — but it is an excellent second stop once Fitzroy’s main lookouts are done and energy remains.
Success is formed lookouts in decent light, not a race to invent a private scramble. If weather closes platforms or tracks, skip rather than improvise. The falls will still be there on a clearer morning.
Always use NPWS for live track status. This guide is unofficial planning language only.
Lookouts and walking honesty
Expect short lookout walks rather than a multi-hour wilderness day. Surfaces, railing status and temporary closures change after storms. Treat published times as orientation only — [VERIFY] on the day.
Children need close supervision at every edge. Cameras and phones go behind barriers, not through them. Wind on the escarpment can make “just one step closer” a bad idea.
If you only have time for one waterfall precinct and you are new to Morton, Fitzroy Falls usually wins for visitor centre support and classic first-visit logistics. Choose Belmore as primary only when you already know the access and want a quieter product.
Pairing with Fitzroy without melting the day
The classic highlands combo is Fitzroy morning + Belmore afternoon (or reverse if parking/alerts force it). Build drive time, pay-station time and a food stop into the clock — map apps understate winding highlands links.
Do not also stack Bundanoon rainforest and Pigeon House the same calendar day from a late start. Two waterfall nodes done well beat four half-finished nodes.
Screenshot alerts for both precincts. One open, one closed is still a successful highlands day if you protect the open product.
Weather, seasons and road realism
Southern Highlands weather swings: mist, rain and cold wind sit next to bright sun on the same day. Pack layers and waterproof shells even in summer. Winter can be icy on shaded roads and timber — [VERIFY] conditions before committing to cliff-edge walks.
After heavy rain, tracks and lookouts may close for safety. That is NPWS doing its job, not a personal inconvenience to argue with on social media.
Fog on escarpment roads is a real planning input. Leave margin; do not chase sunset lookouts on unfamiliar wet roads after a long day.
Access, fees and bases
Stay in Robertson, Kangaroo Valley, Moss Vale or Bundanoon for Belmore-friendly starts. Confirm which park entry fees apply for the precincts you drive through — figures commonly cited for Fitzroy and Bundanoon should still be [VERIFY]’d live.
No camping as a Belmore lookout product. For park camping, Gambells Rest near Bundanoon is the NPWS-bookable option to research — book only through official NPWS channels; never treat camping as an affiliate product on this site.
No pets. Stay on signposted tracks. Respect Yuin Country and other visitors at shared lookouts.

FAQ — Belmore Falls
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Is Belmore Falls worth it if I already did Fitzroy?
Yes for many visitors who want a second gorge/waterfall viewpoint and still have daylight and energy. Skip it if weather, fatigue or alerts make a second cliff-edge stop unwise — one excellent waterfall precinct is still a complete highlands day.
How far is Belmore from Fitzroy Falls?
They are commonly combined in one Southern Highlands day, but exact drive time depends on route and conditions. Treat map estimates as optimistic in rain, fog or holiday traffic — [VERIFY] your route and leave margin.
Are the walks long?
Most visitors plan short lookout-focused walks rather than a full-day trek. Confirm current track names, distances and grades on NPWS before travel — temporary closures and realignments change what is open.
Can I swim at the base of the falls?
Do not invent base-of-falls access or swimming products from blogs. Stay on signposted tracks and follow NPWS rules and safety advice. Cliff and gorge country is not a casual swimming hole network.

- Insect repellentRainforest gullies and summer evenings — especially Bundanoon tracks
- First-aid + blister kitSteep summit approaches and longer gorge walks punish new boots
