Things to do at Morton National Park
Last reviewed · verify live conditions with NSW National Parks / NPWS
Most first visits revolve around the Fitzroy Falls lookouts, with optional Belmore Falls or Bundanoon walks as same-day or Plan B products. Southern Pigeon House Mountain (Didthul) is a separate South Coast summit day — not a casual Fitzroy add-on. Remote gorge / plateau edges need fitness and UXO / restricted-area discipline. Always confirm track status and fees on the official park page.

Fitzroy Falls
Day one rule
Pick one primary product (usually Fitzroy Falls lookouts). Do not stack West Rim + Belmore + full Bundanoon + Pigeon House on a first late start.
Weather / energy bail-out
Bundanoon shade, main formed lookouts only, or town reset beat forced cliff edges in heat, storms or hangry kids. Bail-outs are competence.
Summit / remote filter
Pigeon House and remote gorge days need water, fitness and separate logistics. Not an impulse add-on after a café crawl at Fitzroy.
- 1
Fitzroy Falls lookouts
Signature · easy–moderate · peak weekends busy
The classic first-visit product: day-use parking, visitor centre orientation when open, formed lookouts over the waterfall and Yarrunga Valley. Unfenced cliffs, peak weekend parking and misty plateau weather are real — arrive early and agree a turnaround.
- 2
West Rim track (when open)
Moderate+ · status-critical · cliff edges
Longer rim walking beyond the main lookout cluster — only when energy, weather and track status allow. Not a casual add-on after a late start or full Belmore day.
- 3
Belmore Falls lookouts
Lookouts · easy–moderate · Kangaroo Valley side
Southern Highlands multi-drop waterfall views toward Kangaroo Valley. Excellent second stop or quieter contrast to Fitzroy — still cliff realism and separate logistics.
- 4
Bundanoon rainforest & woodland walks
Shade · easy–moderate · families
Shade, birds and formed tracks around Bundanoon (Fairy Bower, Erith Coal Mine and peers when open). Strong Plan B when wind, heat or crowds make the plateau rims less fun. Entry fees often apply by precinct — [VERIFY].
- 5
Pigeon House Mountain (Didthul)
Summit · moderate–hard · South Coast base
Iconic South Coast summit near Milton / Ulladulla — ladders/steps, fitness and water required. Different drive and logistics from Fitzroy Falls. Do not stack with a full Highlands day unless the group is genuinely strong.
- 6
Safety, UXO & restricted areas
Non-negotiable · official rules first
Parts of the south-eastern park were formerly used for military training and may contain unexploded ordnance. Restricted zones exist. Stay on signposted tracks; treat remote gorge / plateau edges as experienced-only.
- 7
Photography & lookout days
Lookouts · weather-dependent · no edge risk
Waterfall face, gorge light and plateau mist reward patience. Stay behind barriers; wet rock after rain is slick. Fog can erase views — lookouts still count as a successful park day.
- 8
Gateway towns & stays
Bases · services · NPWS camping only official
Bundanoon, Moss Vale, Bowral, Kangaroo Valley, Robertson (Highlands); Milton / Ulladulla / Nowra for Pigeon House. Official campgrounds (e.g. Gambells Rest) book only via NPWS — never affiliated here. Commercial stays are outside the park boundary.

Guided tours
Optional — useful for Southern Highlands logistics and first visits
A tour does not replace checking NSW National Parks alerts, weather, or cliff safety yourself.
What to bring
Practical kit for cliff walks and changeable mountain weather
- Grip walking shoes / trail runnersLookout paths can be damp; Pigeon House has steep / ladder sections — fashion shoes fail
- Layers for plateau weatherSouthern Highlands plateaus run cold and misty; summer still needs a warm layer for rim lookouts
- Rain shell (packable)Waterfalls look best after rain — and tracks get slippery the same day
- Day pack 15–25 LWater, snacks, layers for half-day falls circuits or full summit days
- Water bottle or bladder 1.5–2 L+Pigeon House and remote gorge days need more water than a short Fitzroy lookout loop
- Sun hat + SPFPlateau sections and summit approaches can be exposed even when valleys look shaded
- Insect repellentRainforest gullies and summer evenings — especially Bundanoon tracks
- First-aid + blister kitSteep summit approaches and longer gorge walks punish new boots
- Head torch (remote days)If you misjudge a longer walk, finishing in dusk on escarpment tracks is a real risk
- Power bank + offline mapsScreenshot NPWS alerts; mobile coverage is patchy or absent in many park sections
