Treat Fitzroy Falls / Belmore Falls as the high-volume day-visitor core, Bundanoon as the northern rainforest/escarpment base, and Pigeon House Mountain (Didthul) as the iconic summit walk further south-east. One primary product per day beats a multi-gateway scramble.
How long do I need?
Typical drive from the Sydney CBD to Fitzroy Falls / Bundanoon is about 2–2.5+ hours each way depending on traffic and which Highlands road you take. Pigeon House (Didthul) is a separate South Coast commute via Milton / Ulladulla — not a short hop from the Fitzroy visitor centre. Those are planning bands from published visitor logistics, not a clocked “we left at 6:12” diary.
Who should not attempt a Sydney day-trip: anyone leaving the CBD mid-morning on a peak weekend still hoping for Fitzroy lookouts, Belmore, a Bundanoon gully and Didthul before a safe night return.

Crowds, seasons & parking
Peak crowds at Fitzroy Falls and popular lookouts on weekends, school holidays and fine-weather days — arrive early for parking. Remote sections stay quieter; Fitzroy and Bundanoon see the bulk of day-visitor traffic. Waterfalls often look best after rain, when tracks are also more slippery.

Parts of the south-eastern park were formerly used for military training and may contain unexploded ordnance (UXO). Restricted zones exist. Stay on signposted tracks and vehicle trails only and follow all official instructions. This is non-negotiable for remote southern / eastern trips — check Park Alerts before you go.
Unfenced cliff edges and lookouts — serious fall risk; keep children close and stay behind barriers.
Slippery rocks / tracks after rain, especially near waterfalls.
